Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai Discusses Bodhghat Multipurpose Dam and Indravati-Mahanadi Interlinking Projects with Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Around 7 Lakh Hectares of Land to Be Irrigated Through Both Projects

Projects to Play a Key Role in Comprehensive Development of Bastar

Raipur, June 7, 2025 – Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai held an in-depth discussion with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi regarding the construction of the Bodhghat Multipurpose Dam Project and the Indravati-Mahanadi Interlinking Project as national projects.

The Chief Minister stated that the Bastar region, long affected by Naxalite insurgency, has lagged behind in the development of irrigation infrastructure. To overcome this and ensure all-round development, the Chhattisgarh government is working on both the Bodhghat Multipurpose Dam Project and the Indravati-Mahanadi Interlinking Project.

He emphasized that the Bodhghat Dam, proposed on the Indravati River, will be a decisive project for the holistic development of Bastar. The Indravati River is a major tributary of the Godavari. The project was mentioned in the 1980 award by the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal, along with other projects that have since been implemented in other states. However, due to its remote location and the Naxal issue, this particular project has remained uninitiated.

Double the Pace of Development in Bastar

The Bodhghat Multipurpose Project will greatly enhance irrigation capacity and significantly boost development in Bastar. It will facilitate:

Irrigation across 3,78,475 hectares in both Kharif and Rabi seasons,

125 MW of hydroelectric power generation,

Annual fish production of 4,824 tonnes,

49 million cubic meters of drinking water supply,

Job creation through ancillary activities.

Additionally, the Indravati-Mahanadi Interlinking Project will enable irrigation over more than 3,00,000 hectares of land, including 50,000 hectares in Kanker district alone. Together, both projects are poised to transform Bastar into a self-reliant and developed region.

What is the Bodhghat Multipurpose Dam Project?

The project is proposed on the Indravati River, a significant tributary of the Godavari River. The Indravati flows for 264 kilometers within Chhattisgarh. The dam site is located approximately 8 km from Barsur village in Geedam Tehsil, Dantewada district, and about 100 km from Jagdalpur city.

Key Features of the Project:

Estimated combined cost of both projects: ₹49,000 crore

Indravati-Mahanadi Link Project: ₹20,000 crore

Bodhghat Multipurpose Dam: ₹29,000 crore

Components include civil works for irrigation and hydropower (electromechanical) works.

Live storage capacity: 2,009 million cubic meters (MCM)

Total storage capacity: 2,727 MCM

Surface area at full reservoir level: 10,440 hectares

Districts That Will Benefit:

The Bodhghat project will benefit 269 villages in Dantewada, Bijapur, and Sukma districts.
